Call for Presentation: „Sustainable Business at the Organizational Level: From Siloed Functions to Integrated Strategy”12th NIBES research session

Session:  Sustainable Business at the Organizational Level: From Siloed Functions to Integrated Strategy

Aim and Scope

Following the tradition of the previous NIBES research workshops, the aim of the session is to exchange research interests and ideas among members of the Network of International Business and Economics Schools. The research workshop is proposed by Katarzyna Sanak-Kosmowska, Assoc. Prof. of Marketing, Krakow University of Economics.

The workshop will focus on the multifaceted nature of sustainable business at the organizational level. While sustainability has become a strategic priority for many enterprises, its implementation often results in functional „silos”—separate initiatives in areas like operations, HR, or marketing that fail to fully integrate or acknowledge their mutual influence.

This session seeks to explore the challenges and opportunities arising from this fragmented approach. We invite contributions that move beyond siloed thinking to examine how sustainability is integrated across different organizational functions and what the implications are for overall business strategy and performance.

This call for presentations would welcome contributions in, but not limited to, the following areas :

  • Breaking down the Silos: Submissions addressing how organizations can effectively integrate sustainability across functional boundaries (e.g., the intersection of sustainable operations and marketing, or HR and supply chain).
  • Marketing Dimensions of Sustainable Business: Contributions exploring the strategic and practical aspects of sustainable marketing, including green branding, communicating sustainability to consumers, ethical consumption, and the risk of greenwashing.
  • Organizational Capabilities and Change: Research examining the internal capabilities, leadership styles, and organizational structures required to embed sustainability as a holistic, rather than a fragmented, strategic priority.
  • Measurement and Performance: Studies focusing on holistic frameworks for measuring the organization-wide impact of sustainability initiatives and the relationship between integrated sustainability and organizational competitive advantage.
  • Stakeholder Engagement and Value Chains: Contributions that look at how firms manage relationships with multiple stakeholders (employees, investors, community, suppliers) to promote integrated sustainable practices throughout the value chain
